In 2023, the South Swedish energy company Öresundskraft successfully upgraded their customer information system from AX2009 to EG Xellent D365.
"With the upgrade, we have obtained a modern system running on a contemporary platform, providing us with better capabilities. It's a future-proof system, plain and simple," says CIO Jenny Gustavsson, Öresundskraft.
The background for the upgrade project was a strong desire for a more modern solution:
"We needed to upgrade our customer information system to invoice our customers, as well as to have a system and processes compliant with legal requirements while ensuring support and future upgrades from our system provider," she explains.
"The project began with an analysis phase where we spent time analyzing assumptions, needs, competencies, and necessary constraints. This helped us establish the project structure and acquire the right expertise to build a team. The project scope and agreement with EG were developed simultaneously and aligned well, which was crucial," Jenny Gustavsson mentions.
The project then crafted a plan in collaboration with EG based on what was included, allowing them to focus on delivering what had been decided:
"This led to a greater emphasis on delivery rather than discussions about potential inclusions or exclusions. In other words, we hold on to our scope, which was a key success factor for the project."

A significant focus on testing and validation was also necessary to identify and address issues early in the project. These tests greatly contributed to understanding, education, knowledge sharing and collaboration across boundaries. They also provided significant benefits in anchoring the solution within the company.
"We allowed employees who would be working in the system to test, which contributed to them having a deep understanding of the system at launch and the ability to convey the rationale behind the solutions," says Jenny Gustavsson.
In May 2023, Öresundskraft went live with the EG Xellent D365 upgrade. Subsequently, the energy company evaluated the entire project and expressed great satisfaction with the results:
"We had a very close dialogue and a good collaboration with EG throughout the project.
We were some of the final EG customers to carry out this upgrade, , and it was evident that EG had accumulated a significant amount of knowledge and experiences from their previous projects. Their recommendations were significant for the progress of the project."
The project has been substantial and vital for Öresundskraft:
"It has affected many aspects of our business since the upgraded system handles various core processes, from measurement data and customer information to billing," explains project leader Viveka Ellerth, Öresundskraft.
"We have engaged the company's experts in the relevant business areas and used each other's expertise to define the relevant requirements, test, and implement EG Xellent Dynamics D365. The project has been characterized by a very good and close collaboration between the steering committee, project team, the system provider, and the line of business," Viveka Ellerth elaborates.
"There have been productive discussions and commitment all the way, and we shared a common goal of what to do, how to do it, and everyone was determined to make it a success."
The transition from project to operation and management also became more straightforward since all parties already agreed, and we managed to create a feeling of this being 'our collective project.' In other words, we are very proud of the result we have achieved in this complex project, where we have also met the project's goals within time, scope, and budget," says project leader Viveka Ellerth, Öresundskraft.
Based on the experiences from the project, project leader Viveka Ellerth has six recommendations for others with similar large projects:
