Smartvatten and EG enter Nordic-wide partnership to combat property water waste
The partnership between the two companies will enable EG customers to optimize water usage and reduce costs in their real estate investments. With the upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, partnerships like these play a crucial role for real estate management companies which are expected to monitor their portfolio’s water use.
The European leader in water management technology Smartvatten and the software company EG, with the energy management systems EG Mestro and EG EnerKey, have entered a commercial partnership in the Nordics. Building on their collaboration in Finland and Sweden, where over 4,000 water meters have been integrated between Smartvatten' s solutions and EG's platforms, the companies are now expanding their collaboration to all Nordic markets. This strategic expansion will benefit both existing and new customers in the real estate market by streamlining water management operations and enhancing sustainability efforts.
Water has become crucial to sustainable development goals. Rising prices and the need for actionable insights drive efforts to tackle water-related challenges. According to the Annual Water Report by Smartvatten, over half of residential houses and one-third of commercial buildings experienced monthly leaks, with commercial leaks 3.4 times larger. Water prices have increased by three to eight percent, and in some parts of Europe by over 20 percent. These hikes are driven by water scarcity and aging infrastructure, posing challenges for households and utilities.
Buildings equipped with Smartvatten systems save on average, seven percent of water in the first year, and leaks are detected every two months. When combined with EG’s platform, their customers can realize annual savings of up to 500,000 m3 of water*, leading to significant cost reductions, decreased CO2 emissions, and reduced risk of water-related damage.
The new partnership shows both companies’ commitment to supporting the new legislation rolled out by the European Commission. With the upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, CSRD, most companies are also expected to monitor and report their water usage and management.
"With the addition of Smartvatten' s technology, EG customers are offered a way to add advanced water monitoring through a scalable, plug-and-play solution," said Karl Jepsson, Chief Product & Strategy officer at Smartvatten. "This partnership enables us to offer the most advanced water data insights available, helping customers comply with ESG standards like the European Commission’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, BREEAM, and GRESB."
Headquartered in Denmark and with a strong presence in Sweden, Norway, and Finland, EG has become the leading Nordic provider of real estate energy management software. EG offers comprehensive platforms for sustainable energy management, delivering real-time data that underpins energy optimization, conservation efforts, and climate action initiatives across property portfolios. By integrating Smartvatten’ s water management services into EG EnerKey, more EG customers can access highly precise water data. This is essential for reducing water usage, lowering operational costs, and preventing water damage.
"With this expanded partnership, we're providing Nordic real estate companies access to even more powerful tools for improving sustainability outcomes," said Vice President Jaakko Huhta, FM & EMS Sales, EG. "Our combined solutions will enable customers to optimize their energy and water usage, helping them meet ESG targets and regulatory requirements."
